Internet 2

The Internet2 Initiative
The Internet2 project brings together the university community, government and industry partners to accelerate the next stage of Internet development in academia. Internet2 plans to create and sustain a leading edge network capability for the national research community. The Intiative supports the development of applications for this high-speed, broadband network which will include media integration, interactivity, and real time collaboration.

EVL's co-director Tom De Fanti heads Internet2's Applications Council and EVL's involvement with the next generation of the internet, which began with work on the I-WAY at Supercomputing 95, continues.

UCAID meeting April 1998
Demonstrations of advanced Internet applications were a highlight of the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development (UCAID) member meeting hosted by Internet2 and Highway 1 on April 16 1998.

EVLers were at the UCAID meeting with the following networked Immersadesk demonstrations:

At the meeting Al Gore announced that Internet2, the new computer network will be funded with $500 million of private investment. The project is closely related to the Clinton administration's Next Generation Internet initiative. While the Internet2 project is using university and private sector funds to build a super-fast network, the next generation initiative is using government money to fund basic research about using the faster network. Both projects are intended to develop new technologies that will trickle down to the global Internet as well as private computer networks.
