Summer 2001 Lincoln Park Plan

Notes from the July 11th meeting.

Main Ideas

-This year we need to put more thought into pre and post tests for lessons.

-We will strive to record small group interaction for the projects. This will single out some students, however….

-Fairness will not be considered this year. Due to the time, hardware, and manpower restraints, we will not guarantee that all classes in a particular grade will do the same lesson.

Schedule ( Lincoln Elementary starts Sept. 4th )

ISAT  : Feb-March?

Stanford : 3rd grade 1 week for testing. Little prep time

6th grade first month prep and testing

Plasma Bees in 3rd grade Early to Mid-September

Plasma Bees in 6th grade Mid-October

Solar System

Can we get a good activity on the seasons out of the Solar System App?

What do we want the students to observe?

Can we get an activity on moon phases in the SS App?

This App could cover many of the 3rd grade earth science standards!

Use Red Shift of stars to measure distance?

The Field

6th Grade : Plan on doing the salinity field lesson.

Should we do some time series plan lessons?

Bees

6th and 3rd grade

How do bees fit into Physical Science?

Distance traveled per unit time.

Do we give students a compass, other measuring devices? (pda/notebook/on-screen)

Do we alter the environment to measure distance easier? (concentric circles, distance signs)

Measuring bee speeds. Acceleration, Distance, Time (use a stopwatch?)

Should we employ Animal-Landlord for some animal behavior activity?

How do we document bee info exchange?

Use progress portfolio?

Quizzes?

Create a fact graph? (only the teacher knows which fact is which, and show with a bar graph how many students understand the facts?)

Bee bulletin Board (“As You Learn”): student post dated questions and facts on a bulletin board

Fix up the bee environment : Find flowers that are exclusively pollinated by bees and flowers that are not pollinated by bees to populate the environment.

Add some landmarks to the bee environment so that the students can articulate direction better.

Ocean Project

Fits perfectly with 4th grade science goals.

Depth/pressure/temp

Mars Explorer

Do we want to try to rehash this project, there is good opportunity for lessons with minerals and rocks?

6th Grade Life Science (Human Performace)

Do we want to try and do something here?

We could do something with the trackers?

Target acquisition timing?

Exercise bike?
