The Shadow

developers: Robert V. Kenyon, Qin Li, Chihua Ma,
Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago

This project’s goal is to render an avatar on a display screen that will mimic the movements of the person facing the screen, in real-time. This “computer generated mirror” will allow data, taken from a person wearing an exoskeleton robot, to be manipulated prior to its use by the avatar. Movement errors resulting from traumatic brain injury [TBI] or stroke can be gradually introduce into the avatar’s movements so that the person may correct for these small errors rather than the true error which may be very large and complex. This use of “Perception Action” therapy whereby small errors are compensated for by the person over time may result in re-establishing normal walking behavior in stroke and TBI patients.
