Marquee 8000 Series Projector

Physical Setup:

  1. Position the projector:
  2. Connect A-C.
  3. Connect the RGB source (SGI's have sync on green).
  4. Reverse yokes to correct scan (if necessary).
  5. Zero the green convergence [Conv-5-0901-2-0] or initialize the projector [Util-9-0901-4].
  6. Set Horz. Retrace to short. [Utility-1-8]
  1. Optical Setup:
    1. Perform complete optical alignment of green CRT:
      1. Display internal convergence pattern [#].
      2. Set Contrast [Contrast] to 70%.
        1. Rough-in the center focus and the corner focus.
        2. Adjust Scheimflug bolts for best top-bottom focus (The green CRT's left-right is factory preset and rarely is wrong).
        3. Optimize the center and the corner focus.
        4. Adjust electronic focus [Pic-4]. (DO NOT do this for red or blue).
        5. Again optimize the center and the corner focus.
    2. Repeat optical focus for red and blue CRT's.
      1. Zero red [Conv-3-1-0] and blue [Conv-3-3-0] if projector was not initialized.
    3. Adjust toe-in of red and blue CRT's.
      1. Use converge to see alignment [Conv-3-Color].
    4. Adjust Zone Focus [Util-9-0901-2].
  2. Geometric Setup:
    1. Turn off red and blue CRTs [Color-2], and perform the following on green only:
    2. Display the Official CAVEor 'DESK (tm) Stereo Test Pattern (6" grid w/ diagonals) for all the following procedures.
      1. NOTICE: If you don't have it, get it or don't proceed!
    3. Deploy and align the "mylar grid pattern" (or install temporary center-plumb and horizontal-level lines).
    4. Adjust items 1 through 6 of the geometry menu.
    5. Adjust the projector's feet to level the center horizontal line (make it parallel to the grid's center-level line). Do this to with 1/2 scan line.
    6. Adjust skew [Geo-9] to plumb the vertical center line.
      1. If you can't get it plumb, back off from the max. adjust value by 5% and correct the remaining error later using "green move".
    7. Adjust H. and V. phase [Pic-1] and H. and V. size [Pic-2] until the test image fills the screen. Look to the corners!
      1. Verify green converge has been zeroed [Conv-5-0901-2-0].
      2. Check raster's vertical position on CRT face:
        1. Dim Contrast [Cont] to 10% .
        2. Look through lense for clearance above and below pattern.
        3. Adjust V. Phase to adjust raster position.
        4. Set Contrast back to 50%. (normal)
        5. Raise (or lower) projector feet to bring diagonals to the corners.
      3. Readjust V. phase.
      4. Readjust the projector's feet to level the center horizontal line (make it parallel to the grid's center-level line). Do this to with 1/2 scan line.
        1. Diagonals should intersect corners, if not, repeat geometry and phase adjustments. Note: Get this right, as phase CANNOT be used after this step.
  3. Setup Linearity:
    1. Adjust V. linearity:
      1. Use "C-linearity" [Geo-7] to place horizontal centerline at the desired half-height (must be a multiple of 6").
      2. Use "S-linearity" [Geo-8] to render the best-fit of horizontal lines to the mylar grid.
        1. W/o grid, make diagonals as straight as possible.
    2. Adjust H. linearity:
      1. If the vertical center line is exactly centered (equidistant left and right) and diagonals intersect the corners, skip to Step IV.
      2. If not , use green converge [Conv-5-0901-2] to adjust static (double zone box) position. (This will shift the whole grid, we'll fix that next).
        1. Superimpose the vertical center line of the CAVE test pattern on the center-plumb line. DO NOT readjust phase.
        2. The horizontal center line position can now be adjusted w/ C-lin... [Geo-7] accessible while still in the converge menu .
        3. Get this intersection 'spot on' (+/- 1/2 scan line). Geometry menu items CANNOT be adjusted after this step.
      3. Use green converge to adjust (re-proportion) the left half, then the right half, of the screen.
        1. Work each column of zones, work out from the center (this keeps overcorrecting to a minimum).
        2. Only do the center column if there is vestigial skew to becorrected. DO NOT readjust the center (static) zone. Again, DO NOT readjust phase.
        3. Make vertical-move adjustments at this time to superimpose the horiz-lines.
      4. Diagonals should once again intersect the four corners, if not, zero green and repeat Geometry and Linearity above.
        1. Anal option: If time permits, repeat all of Section IV (with out zeroing green) until optimal geometry is obtained.
  4. Complete Green Setup on all CAVE projectors.
  5. Final fitting:
    1. Make minor green moves to get best screen to screen continuity of CAVE(tm) Test patterns at all corners.
  6. Convergence:
    1. Converge red to green.
      1. Using random access, work each column of zones, work out from the center (this keeps overcorrecting to a minimum).
    2. Converge blue to green.
      1. Using random access, work each column of zones, work out from the center (this keeps overcorrecting to a minimum).
    3. Converge red to blue.
      1. Using random access, work each column of zones, work out from the center (this keeps overcorrecting to a minimum).
        1. Use color button to toggle to this color combo.
  7. Backup the completed Setup:
    1. Copy the completed setup to Recall #01 [Util-1-1-Recall-01-enter].
      1. This copies the working file to "Recall #1.
    2. Copy the completed setup to Recall #96 [Util-1-1-Recall-96-enter].
      1. This copies the working file to "Recall #96 (our backup copy).
    3. Recall the backup file [Recall-96].
      1. Lock the backup file [Util-1-3].
    4. Recall the working file [Recall-01].
      1. This leaves users with access to R #1 but keeps R #96 as an archive.
        1. It is advisable to "un-converge" R #96 before locking it.
          1. Use red converge to shift red raster left by 1/2 a test square.
          2. Use blue converge to shift blue raster right by 1/2 a test square.
        2. This will give you an indicator of tampering.
