Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, France in 1841. He was one of the painters whose
style shifted during the course of his career. His early works were solidly Impressionist, but
his later paintings exhibited a more formal and disciplined style. This shift was inspired
during a trip to Italy and first evident in The Umbrellas, which he began before the
trip and finished when he returned. Evidence of both styles are evident in different areas of
the painting.
