EVL Audio: How the CAVE does sound    | top |

The CAVE usually gets audio from multiple sources, all mixed at the Cave Mixer.

Using a direct box to convert the unblanced SGI Audio out to balanced signals, we route the cables through the patch panels and then into the mixer.

At the same time, the TH-2 Phone interface allows us to send and recieve audio over the phone lines.

Coming back from the cave are the PZM ambient mic, and the VEGA wireless mic system. By sending those two out the auxiliary outputs on the mixer, we can use the board for two way communications.

When running NICE or other "moving mouth" avatar based programs, we use the other pre-fader aux send, back into the SGI. Note: it is important NOT to turn up the ambient or wireless mic on the mixer's channel fader, since this causes feedback. Since we are sending audio out the aux channels pre-fader, you don't need them up for the setup to work.

The BAT CAVE is a little more complicated. All audio to and from the BAT CAVE runs over the Lightwave fibre optic transmitters. With this system we have 4 channels of audio going each way. When we do a demo with the phone from the BAT CAVE, it needs to be patched in to the TH-2 in the cold room.

Another thing to keep in mind while in the BAT CAVE is that there's no VEGA wilreless system there, instead we use a headset mic on a wire running directly back to the mixer.

Once again, the moving mouths are run the same way as listed above.
