Non-Linear Editing Intro

Non-Linear Editing
The concept here is you roughly digitize your footage into the computer at low resolution (AVR3s) make your edits, then when you are done, delete the old fooage, and re-digitize ONLY the footage in your edit at high res (AVR75 or 77). The reason for doing this is disk space. No matter how much hard drive space we may have, there never seems to be enough, so we work in this fasion to conserve space. Another nice thing about this, is you can bring your EDL to another machine and continue editing without moving all the digitized media too. Professionals use this method to generate an EDL for a film, and then have a post production house make the edits you specified from your EDL.

One thing to keep in mind, is you need to have control track and time code over your tapes. In order for the computer to automatically re-digitize the shots you chose.
