CS 422 - Spring 2016 Final Exam

CS 422 Final Exam – Spring 2016

For this exam you are going to be designing and discussing an add-on interface to the door from Project 2. You do not need to base your work off of your group’s particular implementation, though you can, but you should assume that the door has all of the capabilities from the project 2 requirements.

The add-on interface will be software for a touch-screen smart phone / phablet / tablet that allows the user to interact with the door while not at the door. This interface will also make use of fabric.js and run in a modern web browser, so the underlying graphics capabilities remain the same. You can assume the device has a camera facing the user, a microphone, a touch screen, and a typical WiFi / cell data connection

A user should be able to use this interface while on the couch or in the kitchen inside the house, while on the road far from home, or when walking up to the door. For example you should be able to do the following things from your handheld device:

·       See the state of the door (locked, unlocked, open)

·       Lock and unlock the door

·       Have an audio/video conversation with a person at the door (on the inside or outside of the door)

·       Hear the doorbell ring

·       View and listen to the inside and outside cameras and microphones at the door

·       Retrieve messages left on the door and leave new messages on the inside or outside of the door

·       Find out the last several times the door was opened

·       and you should add several other important features

You have a limit of 6 double-sided pages with a decent sized font for your submission. You can certainly use more pages for initial sketches and getting your ideas organized, but I will only look at the first 6 double-sided pages (or 12 single-sided pages) that you turn in.

You should use these pages for:

·       storyboards of your design

·       listing and defending what you believe the most common tasks for this interface and how that affects the organization of the user interface

·       how you are supporting a diversity of users

·       how you are designing for error prevention and easy recovery from errors

·       how you are giving effective feedback

·       how you would evaluate this interface

You can use your electronic devices on this assignment and/or pencil/pen and paper, but no connections to the outside world or to other people - i.e. you can use any media currently on your device but you cannot go out to the outside world. At the end of the exam you can go back online to turn in your work if you need to email andy (ajohnson@uic.edu) something. If you do email something, be sure that andy has received it before you leave. Please make sure your full name is clearly identifiable on what you hand in

A company is interested in your door idea, but instead of wanting to use this technology for an exterior door, they want to sell them as interior doors, and in particular as the bedroom door for someone 10-18 years old, so they would like to know what would that version of the door be like. Some of the user needs will be similar to project 2 but others will be different, so the implementation of the door’s interface will be different.
