- Left Orlando - definitely with some doubts. I wonder how "interactive"
I need to be at all - In some ways its minimal at the moment and I could
almost remove what's there - simply make the thing move from applaudatory
to critical to angry whatever people do. And in the rest of the story -
how much room for real interactivity is there? Interactivity maybe but
not much choice!

Fri 24th |
- Thing networked between SigKids and Digital Pavillions. 9:00 - 11:00
- I sat in SigKids and voyeured. It seemd much crueller from that side
- building people up then crushing their aspirations and then the Thing
runs off in a huff however hard they try. I tended to use the manic mood
so they got very built up as opposed to Dave always using sad.
- Misha, Carlos and Dave ran the Digital Pavillions side. I thought that
they explained too much and helped too much, but they said people just
didn't get it. Especially Misha telling them that they would meet a creature
and that nothing they could do would please it.
- From my end watching - people either danced perfectly or didn't dance
at all - I should mix the dance moves - make some more complicated - cos
it's good to have them both fail and succeed so they really feel that what
they do is known.
- The music/humming drove everyone mad. Misha said some people said they
would have been happier to dance to better music.
- Everything was flurried. It would be very good to orient helpers so
they know how to present stuff.
- Some people said they couldn't stand so much bitchiness early in the
morning.
- Driving the feedback remotely will I hope be a good lesson as I try
and make the thing's own AI switch moods and give feedback on how the person
is dancing.
- Much less harrowing being at the other end - but I wonder about timing
- although I shortened the dance period from 4 to 3 minutes still some
people wanted out. But you can't please everyone all the time!
- At 1:00 we packed up - were all done by 3:00 - went to pool - saw alligator
behind hotel - Johnny went much too close - ate Indian.

Tues - Thurs |
Went to the parties and events.
Looked at the art work of the people in my Gallery Talk and introduced
myself to them all except Rebecca Allen and Paul Vanouse.
Talked to Cavernus about the thing.
Chaired the Gallery Talk - want to contact my panel and write something
about interactivity jumping off from their work, my thoughts etc.
Went to a couple of interesting panels - must check the guide to see
who was on them

Mon 19th |
- The Thing Showed networked between registration and the Digital Pavillions
area. I was very nervous and panicking.
- Dave could not get the menu to work on the idesk3 with the tracker
and finally ran in simulator mode
- We connected four trackers and I helped people into the harness Mike's
mother made to attach the people to the trackers.
- The app starts with a cube turning which says "this is a work
in progress" etc. While that turned I got people used to navigating
and then they had to click on the cube to start.
- While the cube turned, I am humming the tune - much too loudly! It
drove me mad and I kept shouting at Jim to mute it. Then he got mad. Finally
I stopped the app and changed the volume - then we made up.
- When people were in the app, I left them to the thing - not answering
their questions. Though sometimes I shouted to Dave and Johnny at the other
end to do something. People left without appropriate feedback about how
they were dancing were discouraged.
- The timer that is meant to run during the time that the thing and person
are dancing, sometimes misbehaved and the thing would immediately get mad
and run off.
- User Comments - "I thought user interfaces were meant to be friendly."
"Nice mixture of the interactive and the narrative." A guy from
Computer Graphics came around and I got his card. I had neglected to make
any hand out saying where the Thing's web site was.
- We had a three hour slot - tried to get things's working for about
30 mins. And by the end I was very glad to be done. Several people tried
to escape during their time with the Thing. People came in groups and laughed
at their friends being harrassed. Dave usually made the thing sad (whiny)
and people would say nothing pleases her.
- Gerfried and Horst came - Horst danced and laughed. Gerfried noted
that the lack of directional sound was more of a problem with a VR character.
Horst said - are you using 4 trackers! We have to talk!

Sun 18th
|
- Walked around to familiarize group with all our locations and check
if thing's were working.
- Everything was good in the SigKids, and Kid deck area - but we had
to vacate the reception are without checking cos they were opening. Anyway
there still wasn't power there - they promised it would be there by the
end of the day.
- Show opened at 5:00 - we showed Asteroid World/Round Earth networked
from SigKids to Digital Pavillions
- The app ran stereo on the idesk3 but most people could not fuse the
stereo
- During the AEC party - I checked my app!

- Arrived in Orlando - EVL is using 2 idesks and four locations - one
