Transport protocols let applications to utilize the underlying network resources optimally. Existing transport protocols have limitations when they are used in new application domains and for new optical networking technologies. In our photonic testbeds, node-to-node bandwidth is usually at least 1 Gbps. But if we use standard TCP, chances are that we can only use a small fraction of the underlying bandwidth. So we need to make up the gap between abundant network resources and hungry applications. We are developing new transport protocols to streamline the entire system.
