Compression Standards

H.320 Standards developed by ITU defines the technical requirements for narrow-band visual telephone services for line transmission of non-telephone signals at 64 kbps. Uses spatial compression for up to 42:1.
  • Resolutions are 352X288 (CIF) and 176X144(QCIF)
  • Frame rates of 7.5, 10,15,or 30 fps.
  • Audio 84-64Kbps Narrowband, 84-64Kbps Wideband, & 16Kbps Narrowband
MPEG

MPEG2

Open standards developed by ISO used for high quality moving image transmission. Uses spatial and temporal compression of up to 100:1. Can compress any resolution in hardware or software.
MPEG4 Proposed standard for low bandwidth high quality
JPEG ISO standard for still images. Uses spatial compression for up to 27:1.
Motion JPEG Proprietary standard of sending seriess of jpeg files to create motion.
