GIF Compression
Gif compression is an 8-bit loss-free compression algorithm. Each pixel is
examined individually and crunched down to its lowest possible size. Here's

That means:
Gifs are great for images with a lot of edge content like cartoons or pictures of
text. These sorts of things compress real good! Here's a big example from my home page:
