And now my friends are on the dock. The cast is still on Mercedes' left arm. I
can see it gleaming as she waves. And Pilar waves, and Irma waves and
the dog, Small, runs around and barks. And the boat pulls away, and they
are blurry and wavy as I wave back. And suddenly they run for the car,
and then I think I see it on the road that goes around the bay. I see the
car trying to follow me, but I am on the boat and at the top of the bay
we will turn the other way and they won't be able to follow me any more.
And pretty soon I don't want to watch the departing, rolling, green hills,
I want to go down to my room and sleep and forget the land that is now
abandoning me and slipping away from me; sleep in the cabin that the
ex-student Mauricio secured for me alone, even though it is a double, because
he works for the ferries and could fix it for me.
