Design a Garden

Pretend that you are part of a design team that has to submit a design for a sculpture garden. This garden will be built in the center of a big city, so the people of the city can enjoy the natural environment (trees, bushes, water, flowers, etc.) but also to view sculptures of all types and scales, much like the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.

Here's your chance to make a mock-up, a design of this garden on-line. Don't forget that a successful garden design should pay attention to many important elements, such as the placement of the sculptures, paths for walking, benches, trees, etc. As you design your garden think of where paths will be placed. How will people move through the garden? Where are the entrances and exits to the garden? Where is the handicap access? Where is the most unique aspect of the garden?
How will your sculpture be highlighted? How will the sculptures be seen, both from a distance and close range?
What will be the most noticeable areas of the garden? Think about balance. Will your design be symmetrical or asymmetrical?

Here are some design elements that are available for you to use for your design:
  • 4 grassy areas for the display of sculptures, both large and small
  • a system of paths for moving through the garden
  • a sign to indicate a convenient entrance and exit for handicapped access
  • other signs
  • trees and flower beds
  • a pond
  • a building that can be used year round
