Camera Considerations

Several issues arise when determining which type of camera and acquisition format should be used for a green screen project. Here are a few tips to get you started.

  1. Shoot in the format you will finish on. If your project is for theatrical release, shoot on film, if it is to be released on video, shoot on video.
  2. Select film stocks with higher resolution (finer grain). 16mm is unuseable.
  3. Use 3 chip cameras, and component video formats.
  4. Don't use compressed digital formats for field acquisition. Too much compression in the original footage will cause problems in the Ultimatte processing. 3:1 compression in your source is too much.
  5. Never shoot with the aperture wide open.
  6. Manually white balance your camera, never use the automatic white balance setting.
