White Balancing the Camera

White Balancing the Camera

White balancing your camera is one of the most essential tools for achieving proper color reproduction. The best, and only way to do this is by placing a white piece of paper in the foreground lighting. Then zoom into it, throw the camera out of focus, and manually set the white balance. For film shooting, you will place a chip chart (grey card) in the shot for proper color timing at the lab.

Dont's

  1. Use a camera without manual white balancing.
  2. Use automatic white balancing.

Do's

  1. Set the camera's color temperature to the proper setting.
    • Daylight 5600K
    • Tungsten 3200K
  2. Manually white balance the camera.
    • Place the white card in the foreground lighting.
    • Be sure there is no spill from the backing color.
    • Backing spill on the white card will cause the camera to misinterpret the color of the backing.
  3. If using a polarizing filter, white balance with the filter on.
