This work in progress CD is due out in May of this year. It will
include tracks based on ideas about
Cyberspace, Cyberculture, and technology in general. The
majority of sounds are sampled from outside
digital sources including video arcades, computer games, the
intenet in general, and computer and video
hardware.
Here are some samples of songs on the album:
Based on a biographical book about the painter Rober Irwin, and sound
samples from a composer
named Dary John Mizelle. Irwin's anti-McClullan quotes face off
against Mizelle's bizarre string and
bell sounds. Other samples are drums from R.E.M. and
The Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind soundtrack.
For this track about the culture of the video arcade game, I went to
a local arcade to sample some sounds.
The dirty pounding noises are from a football game, and other music
comes from Mortal Kombat,
a pinball game, and The Simpsons the game. J.C. Herz's
book Joystick Nation was also an important
influence in the song.
The old simple procedural music programmed into the Atari 2600 is the
basis for this track. Additional
modernized sounds include screaming and screeching from Carmageddon.
I found it interesting to see
how these computer game sounds have grown just as the violence of the
home game has exploded.
More computer game sounds abound in this jungle song. Sounds from
Coleovision, Carmageddon, and a
game called Abuse make for a strange mix. As usual, the requisite
laughter sample can be found on this track.
Inspired by 2 diverse sources: Dublin's DJ Dara, and a book called "The
War of Desire and Technology",
this track contains jungle beats thanks to Dara, and Roni Size.
All the other sounds in the song were found
on a demonstration CD that came with a digital camera. Never
even watching the multi-media demo, the
sounds were simply co-opted into this composition.
I searched the internet for some sounds to compliment W.J.T. Mitchell's
book "City of Bits", and found these
strange samples. The voices are all from a subliminal tape production
company, 3 segments, one on sexual
profiencency. The robot sounds are all from Lost in Space, and
the bagpipe chorus is from some random
bagpipe sounds I found.
For this weeks song, I found a massive web page dedicated to sounds of Star Trek.
Capitalizing on this little find, I've made a jungle song with these samples, plus of
course, massive bass sounds from the Orbit. Thanks Emu.
This song is made mostly of samples I recorded one day at lab. I was thinking
about all the annoying buzzez, hums and clicks I'm subjected to every day
and decided to make a song of them.
