Student Virtual Game Company Web Sites Game Title and Concept Comments
Applied Widgetronics
3D game with a Pedal Plane

  • 1st Prize Winner
  • Simple and effective game play
  • Maticulous art work and use of sound
  • Very complete and polished final product
  • Good design tradeoffs for flight dynamics
  • Fantastic use of stereo
Phil Enterprises
Astroid Shooter

Remake of Asteroids

  • 2nd Prize Winner
  • Self-built gravitational physics model
  • Lots of different powerups that affect the gravitational model
  • Team was able to demonstrate each powerup
  • Good exploration of design tradeoffs in the effort to make the game fun
  • Original visual presentation of the traditional asteroids game
  • Should have put the powerup voice-overs in the final version
Spleen

MindBlur

Two player tactical game

  • 3rd Place Honorable Mention
  • Technically complex implementation for matching logical constraints
  • Development of flood-fill algorithm to determine reachability for combatants
  • Limited camera views detracted from the stereoscopic experience
  • Would have been good to be able to see the game from the chess piece's point of view
  • Spleen intends to continue development of their game. For the latest version of their game go to: http://spleen.microfirmz.us
Asterisk

Arcanius

Solar System Exploration game for Adler Planetarium's Crown 3D Theater

  • Original game idea
  • Excellent presentation of visual effects
  • Effective techniques for dealing with size and scale to represent the solar system
  • Game can be confusing to players who are unfamiliar with all the different levels to the game
  • Game did not have the ability to restart
Jagson Entertainment

iSmash

Third person shooter flavored after SmashTV, Running Man, Contra

  • Strong start with prototype in mid-semester
  • Excellent 3D opening menu design
  • Lack of incremental integrations of game capabilities and modules ultimately caused the final product to appear incomplete
  • Would have liked to see more levels to the game to illustrate the ability of the system to load multiple levels
  • Team was not well prepared for final presentation- powerpoints and software were installed just before presentation
  • Game felt incomplete with no ability to restart
Edutron Mars Explorers

Mars Rover driving simulation for Adler Planetarium's Crown 3D Theater

  • Mid-semester demonstration was more engaging than final version
  • Too much time spent on overcoming technical hurdles to the detriment of the overall gameplay
  • Overall gameplay or goal of the game is lost
  • Should have added an arcade mode with non-realistic terrain to to let users enjoy the physics engine more
  • Most of the additional gameplay features indicated at mid-semester were not implemented- e.g. rocks, articulated arm to pick up rocks etc.
  • Too little progress for a 3 person team
Brainwerks Entertainment

Egg 'Em

Egg Shoot'em up Game

  • Mid-semester game was disappointing. There was practically nothing to see
  • Final game was a marked improvement
  • Good attempt to incorporate gameplay elements such as deformable terrain
  • Use of stereoscopic 3D was weak
  • Game simply did not work at all until components were stripped out
  • Insufficient pre-testing on demo systems before class presentation
  • Game had no intro screen, no end screen
  • Game did not restart after ending
Enigma

MapPoint

Drive around night clubs in Chicago and solve mathematical puzzles

  • Challenging gameplay idea since fun and educational games are always difficult to implement
  • Good that at least  1 game puzzle was implemented
  • Camera should have been improved
  • Artwork was lacking compared to other teams
  • Opening stereoscopic movie was nice addition
  • Game ending screens were rushed
  • Overall project felt rushed
