The video editing suite allows you to make multiple dubs at a time. You can dub from Betacam to both VHS decks and the Hi8 all at once.
The procedure is similar to the above (from BETACAM to Hi8 or/and VHS) except for:
3/4" video/audio are connected as a source to betacam, and from betacam to 3/4".
The 3/4 inch deck is now configured as input and output number 7 on the S-Video matrix switcher. You may note the the 3/4 inch is not an S-video device, it does not produce a seperate luminance and chromanance signal, nor does it recieve separate signals. After a little thought I decided that there was no reason that you couldn't put a "T" connector on an S-Video signal and get composite video. As long as the two signals had the same cable length and used the same sync, it should be fine. So on both the 3/4 and the Hi-8 (which also doesn't use S-Video in or out) the Y and C are combined using the methods mentioned above.
The outputs however are still only composite, so they are not compatable with the other components in the matrix. I found out something interesting out though while I was messing around. Both of the Sony S-VHS decks are smart enough that if they recieve composite video on the Y or lumanince channel they just display composite. They're great decks. So if you want to go from/to Hi-8, S-VHS, VHS, 3/4 or from laser disc you can make those dubbs using just the matrix switcher.
The place where this doesn't work is in going to the beta decks. The S-Video routing to the Nova 750 and DPS-290 will not take composite on the Y channel. I guess they are not as smart as the Sony decks. Both the Hi-8 and 3/4 are routed to seperate inputs on the Nova and DPS for use when sending one of those formats into the suite or to betacam. The Hi-8 routs into the Nova, the input is labled. The 3/4 inch deck is patched into the NOVA950's NTSC input. If you switch the matrix so that they s-video version is routed to either of the frame sync's (Nova or DPS) they will display an image, but the colors will be very funky.
The audio while in the dubbing
matrix works with just the push of a button, if you send the VHS to the
3/4 the audio will go also. This is not true going to the Beta decks. In
order to do that you must install a patch cable either from the Matrix output
(labled on the patch bay) to the destination Beta deck or to the input on
the mixer (also labled on the patch bay.)
