Operators

The second and considerably smaller group of users is the operator group. This group consists of those scientists who are very familiar with the workings of a beamline facility and train the visiting scientists as well as manipulate and trouble-shoot beamline hardware. This hardware consists of collections of robotic systems remotely controlled by the operator interface. While this group does not entirely consist of molecular biologists, it may include a few who conduct their own structural biology research. By definition this group has the optimal level of expertise with the system, and as a result, has proprietary access to certain controls that the experimenters should not be able to access. However, whether trouble-shooting or conducting research, they interface with the system via the same computers as the experimenters do. This accommodates the high amount of face to face interaction that occurs between the two user groups.
