Subject: Color
Graduation Standards: (1), (2), (3)
Materials: Imagination

DESCRIPTION: Students learn to identify colors in artworks. The primary purpose is to identify colors, not to discover symbolic meaning or emotional content.

OBJECTIVES: In addition to identifying color, this activity encourages students to stop and look for an extended period of time.

PROCEDURE: Let's all sit in a circle. I'm going to walk around the circle touching each of you on the head. As I'm touching, you will be counting. If I call out a color when I tap you on the head, go to the closest work of art that has that color. (Continue in the same manner, i.e.. one, two, three, four, green. If appropriate, have children take turns counting. Vary the game by calling two or three colors to be found in one work i.e. one, two, three, red and green.)

VARIATION: Can also be used to identify shapes and lines.
