DESCRIPTION: Students learn about primary colors and search for artworks that contain only primary colors.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this activity is for students to demonstrate an understanding of primary colors.

PROCEDURE: Who knows what the primary colors are? There are three primary colors. They are red, yellow, and blue. Does anybody know why they are called primary colors? They are called primary colors because they are the colors from which all other colors are made.

Are any of you wearing clothing that is a primary color? What color is it? Is anybody wearing clothing that has only two primary colors? (It can only have primary colors) Since you are so good at finding primary colors on your clothes, let's go into the galleries and see if we can find art that uses primary colors. Who sees an artwork that has the primary color red in it? How many artworks in this gallery have the color red in it? What about finding two primary colors in an artwork. Can anyone find an artwork with the colors red and yellow in it? How about blue and yellow?

VARIATION: Divide into groups by color. When the tour comes to an artwork that has their color in it, they should raise their hand. After a few artworks, give each group a new color.
