Shape Up

k-3   pdf

Subject: Shape
Graduation Standards: (1), (2), (3)
Materials: Imagination

DESCRIPTION: Students use their bodies to create basic shapes.

OBJECTIVES: Students demonstrate an understanding of basic shapes as they experience the museum.

PROCEDURE: Let's think about circles and make a list of things that are round or have a circular shape. Name some things for me that are round (i.e. moon, wheels, apples, eyeballs, sun, baseballs)? Imagine what our world would be like if circles were squares! How would the world be different if wheels and balls were square or, if people had square eyeballs?

Here are some shapes that are called basic shapes. They are the circle, the square, the triangle and the rectangle. Let's see if we can make circles with our bodies. Let's begin by making circles just with our fingers. Now make a circle with your arms. Let's make circles with our partners and then in small groups. Let's all hold hands and form a circle (repeat for square and/or triangle). Now let's see if we can find some artworks that have these basic shapes in them.
