String Sculpture

k-3   pdf

Subject: Line
Graduation Standards: (1), (2), (3)
Materials: Bright colored shoe laces.

DESCRIPTION: Students use strings to make a "line" sculpture.

OBJECTIVES: Students demonstrate understanding of different line qualities.

PROCEDURE: Here are strings of different lengths. Let's choose partners and sit down. Using the strings, make a straight line with your partner (curved, zig-zag, smooth, jagged, parallel). Now let's stand up and combine our strings to create sculptures that use only straight line. Now let's create a sculpture using only curvy lines. Now let's make a sculpture that has some curvy and some straight lines. Which was the easiest to make? Which was the hardest to make? Let's see if we can find an artwork that is here, that uses only straight lines, (curvy, or combination.)
