Create Your Own Artwork

4-5   pdf

Subject: Synthesis
Graduation Standards: (1), (2), (3)
Materials: Paper and pencils.

DESCRIPTION: Over the course of the entire tour, students apply their new knowledge of the art elements to their own idea for sculpture.

OBJECTIVES: This tour can be used to meet all the objectives of Level II.

PROCEDURE: As we go through the galleries today and look at different artworks, I thought it would be fun to describe what elements you would include if you were to make an artwork. Each of you will get some paper and pencils. Each time we learn about a new element in art, such as subject matter, you should describe how you would use that element in your artwork. For instance, when we are talking about color you will decide what colors you would use in your artwork. By the end of the tour you will have described your own artwork with all of the elements in it.

(After discussing subject matter.) I want you to take your pencil and begin to describe the subject matter of your artwork. Remember, the subject matter can be about a person that you know, an idea that you have, a true or imaginary story, a place that you've been to, or even what you are feeling today. Don't worry about not completing it right away because we are going to add on as we go.

(As you discuss new elements have them pull out their paper and add that element to their work. i.e."Use the pencils to write down the kind of lines you would add to your work." or "Write down what kind of materials you would use in you artwork.")
