DESCRIPTION: Students, in groups of four, search for lines in artworks that express different feelings.

OBJECTIVES: Students demonstrate an understanding of line, analyze its role in the meaning of a work of art, learn how lines convey a mood, and use their imagination to discover meaning in artworks.

PROCEDURE: Let's divide our group into four teams. Team A: search the gallery for an artwork that contains lines that are playful or happy. Team B: choose a work that contains lines that are very upset or angry. Team C: look for one that contains lines that are confused. Team D: find a work that contains lines that create a sense of peace and quiet.

(As you discuss an artwork, pay particular attention to how it might relate to the mood the students identified.)

Age level: Appropriate for grades 2-5.
Artworks used: Use paintings that provide a wide range of various kinds of lines.
Props needed: No props needed.

Notes: Limit the activity to one gallery. In discussing the artwork be sure to discuss how the other elements, color, pattern, and textures add to the overall mood of the artwork.
