Surface Textures

4-5   pdf

Subject: Texture
Graduation Standards: (1), (2), (3)
Materials: A black bag that contains different materials/textures in it. Cards with names of textures on them.

DESCRIPTION: Working in four groups, students locate paintings that describe given textures.

OBJECTIVES: Students learn the meaning and varieties of texture, the role it plays in conveying meaning, and analyze how it works with the other elements. The activity is also intended to encourage students to use their imagination as they explore artworks.

PROCEDURE: The manner in which some artists apply paint to the canvas creates a surface texture. The choice of material and the way in which the artist uses that material determines the texture of sculpture. Now we will look carefully at the surface qualities of an artwork.

Let's form four small groups. I will give each group a card that describes a texture (read the textures aloud first) and you will have a few minutes to find a painting or sculpture that best describes your word. (It is best to limit their search territory to one or two galleries.) As a group discuss possibilities and select one work of art that best represents your texture. When you have chosen one we will look at each selection and see if we can guess what texture you had.

Does the work have only one texture? What other words could be used to describe the same texture? Can you compare the texture to something else? (e.g. "The surface of this painting is like the skin of a banana.") Have you ever seen this kind of texture before? Where?

VARIATION: Give each student a bag with different objects in it and have them describe the texture using words, facial expressions, or a description of how the texture would taste or smell. Have the other students guess what the texture is. Provide questions to help such as, Is it cold?, Is it sharp?, etc. Later, have them match it with an artwork.
