Creating effective collaborative visualization spaces around large, high-resolution displays

Global-scale cyberinfrastructure, from sensor networks to supercomputers, produces greater volumes of data than ever before, and visualization remains the most effective means for researchers to gain insight from it. High-resolution displays and the graphics cards to drive them have become common, but that alone does not create an effective collaborative visualization space. This project works to create spaces that combine a large, high-resolution display approaching the perceptual sphere and visual acuity of a human; support for stereoscopic rendering of both 3D and 2D data; naturalistic interaction through keyboard and mouse, 6-degree-of-freedom joysticks, head tracking and voice; a physical space that invites multiple co-located scientists to sit together and interpret data; and a software layer that leverages the hardware to display multiple related datasets simultaneously using hybrid 2D/3D visualization and interaction modalities.
