Helen-Nicole Kostis
eleni@evl.uic.edu

Helen-Nicole Kostis is a media artist that works with video, animation, virtual environments, physical and digital sculpture. She is captivated by the creation of new, synthetic worlds, immersive bodily experiences, the combination of virtual and physical realities and the discourse that is generated by their coexistence. Born in 1976, lives and works in Chicago, USA. She has received a BS in Mathematics (1998) from the University of Ioannina, Greece, a MS in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Fine Arts at the same institution. She currently works as a Research Assistant at the Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL), University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), where she serves as a technical leader in CAVE based tele-immersive demonstrations and exhibitions, under the supervision of EVL’s co-director Prof. Daniel J. Sandin, and is also part of EVL’s webgroup being responsible for site content and integration of movies into the site, including technical solutions and video editing, under the supervision of EVL’s Associate Director Dana Plepys. She has exhibited at the Canariasmediafest – International Video and Multimedia Festival of the Canaries (2002), Version>03 :: Digital Arts Convergence - Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago (2003), IDEAS Festival (2003, 2004), IEEE VR Open House at EVL (2004), Networks Art and Collaboration Conference (2004), Electronic Visualization Exhibit (2004), Virtual World’s Festival (2004), and Studio 74 Artful Object (2004).  Upcoming event: Collaborative VR panel discussion and exhibition, Electronic Imaging Science and Technology, SPIE (2005)

Tina Shah
tinas@evl.uic.edu

Tina Shah is currently working on her Masters in Fine Arts at the University of Illinois at Chicago in the Electronic Visualization program. Having received her B.A. from Columbia College Chicago in Interactive Multimedia spurred her interest in the combination of technology and art. At UIC Tina has experimented with different artistic mediums ranging from virtual reality to video and now, access grid art! She will soon begin working on her thesis show exploring social and environmental identity concepts.

While pursuing her MFA, Tina is also working as the Web Master at the Electronic Visualization Laboratory where she manages the database and content of the EVL website and develops new designs.

Tina has exhibited her artwork at Version>03 - Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (2003), IDEAS Festival - Bloomington, Indiana (2003), IEEE VR Open House at EVL - University of Illinois at Chicago (2004), Electronic Visualization Exhibit - University of Illinois at Chicago (2004), Virtual World’s Festival - Brazil (2004), and Studio 74 Artful Object Show - Oak Park, Illinois (2004).

Gideon Goldman
gideon@evl.uic.edu

Gideon Goldman is a junior in liberal arts at the University of Illinois at Chicago, majoring in math and computer science, and has been with the Electronic Visualization Laboratory as an undergraduate research assistant since 2003. His current responsibilities include managing and improving the lab's existing interactive collaborative tools and technologies (http://www.evl.uic.edu/cavern/agave, www.evl.uic.edu/cavern/continuum), and developing an optically tracked user interface for cluster-driven tiled displays (www.evl.uic.edu/cavern/SAGE) as an element of the NSF-funded OptIPuter project to create a worldwide infrastructure for data-intensive scientific research and collaboration over dedicated high-speed networks (http://www.evl.uic.edu/cavern/optiputer). He recently assisted with two remote Access Grid presentations for SC Global 2004, demonstrating a collaborative model viewer called ImmersaView and a hardware-assisted, network-enabled "PowerPoint" projector called TeraVision for live streaming of uncompressed video (for instance, a scientist's laptop running proprietary visualization software). After his graduation in 2006, Gideon intends to work as a developer and consultant for the IT industry, facilitating the adoption of
cutting-edge collaborative technologies.

Chris Rosenthal
cmr@evl.uic.edu

Chris Rosenthal is graduating with his B.S. in Computer Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in May 2005. Having worked as an NSF-funded undergraduate research assistant in the Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) at the University of Illinois – Chicago (UIC) since May 2003, Chris has taken on a number of responsibilities. Currently, he works as the leader of a small team that supports the high-bandwidth collaboration of the fifty plus researchers at EVL.

He is also interested in education, and he has been concurrently pursuing his M.S. in Mathematics Education at IIT. As a lab instructor for the past two years he has taught a number of courses, ranging from robotics and C-style programming, to raw Windows API programming, Winsock Networking, and assembly language programming. He looks forward to bringing collaborative, visualization technology to the classroom.

Jonathan Rosenthal
