"To
The Loss of Innocence" / 2 min video / 1998
Produced and screened in AD278
(Video I) and FR433 (French Feminist Theory). Inspired
by Hélène Cixous' "Angst, a written brainstorming
of an emotional narrative. In the Video, emotion is
conveyed by staged, overplayed gestural motion of isolated
body parts (hands, feet, torso). The foreground audio
is a mixed recording of different women reading a passage
constructed by phrases from Cixous' piece and personal
input. The background audio is a ballet classroom: an
instructor calling out typical warmup exercices to a
classical piano piece.
Interpretation
of this video has varied: "ode" to being hurt
by love, a melodramatic nothing, abuse of the female
body. My intent was to not be literal in order to be
truthful Cixous' "Angst". Suffering of some
sort was to be conveyed; one thing to remember is that
my intent was to convey physical and emotional suffering
in contrast with Cixous who described more of
an intellectual suffering.
