DOCUMENTATION

The sketch program

After being exposed to the training area, groups of five at a time were taken to an ImmersaDesk in 2032 ERF. The program running on the ImmersaDesk is documented here in screen snapshots.

The first screen was displayed before the program began, until the tracking glasses were lifted to a height of five feet. Then the second screen was displayed for a few seconds along with some introductory music.

The following panel shows the initial directions to the user, which remained on-screen until the user pressed a wand button. The second panel shows the user drawing a thin green line, using the facsimile of a pen-tip.

These next panels show a thick green line assuming the shape of the thin green line the user drew, the user "picking" another line, and the user drawing another thin green line.

Here the user picked and drew with more lines. There were four lines in total.

These were the messages that popped up at intervals to signal the user to let someone else take a turn, or that the entire experience had concluded.

The sketch-display program

These are snapshots of the projected display in the upstairs area, which showed an animated compilation of what people were sketching and had previously sketched downstairs on the ImmersaDesk. Those who had already been downstairs could see their work played back here.

The CAVE program

After using the ImmersaDesk program, groups were taken into the CAVE. The program running in the
CAVE is documented here in screen snapshots and reconstructed views.

This is a reconstructed view of the CAVE. These screens were displayed before anyone put the tracking glasses on. Once the tracking glasses were raised to a height of five feet or more, the program would begin.

These 3D titles would display while introductory music played.

This is the front view while the user was being pulled along the path toward the first drawing area.

Here is the first drawing area. The instructions for drawing were displayed until the tracked user pressed the appropriate button.

These panels show the user at the first drawing station. After the tracked user drew a thin green line, the circular ribbon moved from its original position into the shape of the line the user drew.

Here the user drew more complex shapes. The ribbon became redder in the places where it was more bent or convoluted.

This set of panels shows the transition to the next drawing area. The user was instructed to switch the tracking glasses with another participant, and the new person was then instructed to go forward by pressing the middle wand button. The users were then pulled along the walkway to the next drawing area.

This is a reconstructed view of the second drawing area. The instructions for drawing were displayed until the tracked user pressed the appropriate button.

At this area, when the tracked user drew a thin green circle, the yellow circle moved from its original position into the shape of the circle the user drew. The straight lines would sway with the motion.

Here the tracked user was warned that he or she would be required to switch the tracking glasses with another participant soon.

This is a reconstructed view of the third drawing area.

In the third drawing area, when the tracked user drew a thin green line, the purple line moved in the same way as the others. However, it left a trail when it moved.

In the fourth drawing area, when the tracked user drew a thin green line, the aqua line moved in the same way as the others. However, it left a horizontal, sparkling trail when it moved.

Here is the transition along the walkway to the entry to the last drawing area.

This is a reconstructed view of the entry to the last drawing area. The arrows on the signs moved slightly.

The tracked user drew a circle inside the last drawing area, which was a large room whose floor was far below the user's position. A circular object then moved from its original position into the shape of the circle the user drew. This object, while moving, left a spiral trail.

Inside the room, navigation was possible with the wand's joystick. Here the tracked user had moved to a position in the room where he could see the circular object and the entry hallway.

This set of panels shows the circular object's response to the tracked user drawing a circle. The tracked user is then warned that the experience is nearly completed.
