MFA THESIS SHOW
INFLUENCES/RESEARCH
“Of all the arts,
dance would seem the least likely to accede to the vagaries
of rapid change and the relentless advances of this
modern technology. Dance, the art of human movement,
on the surface appears nontechnologically inclined.
It is the self-sufficient art.” Judith A. Gray
My
influences for this piece start with Merce Cunningham's
"Points in Space" and "Biped" and
his collaboration with John Cage. Things appear
random but they are not and everything has been developed
in parallel for the simple reason that this is how I
like to work. But do not be fooled; this is a carefully
orchestrated chaos, ruled by random numbers and patterns
with the playfulness of an Oskar Fischinger
animation. It is tempting to be kitch when experimenting
with a black light set and the effects of light but
ever since the popularity of Laterna Magika
from Prague, alternative ways of creating staging have
been embraced. The brightness and translucency that
can be achieved with graphics projections in VR seems
to be the perfect medium to experiment with for staging
purposes. This piece concludes two years of experimentation
and research in dance, technology and tracking systems.
Additional research was performed
for solving conceptual issues of correlations of color,
type, music and animation and a whole new world was
opened to me. Making choices in music, color and type
in this project is partially based on this research
but more than anything reflects my understanding of
these relationships and my personal choices. I imagined
my self as a synaesthetic, closed my eyes and tried
to see and hear what could be possible. What color is
the letter A? What music goes with A? What kind of animation
complements that color and audio? Give it a try. Maybe
my choices are biased. Maybe your choices will be biased
if you watch the show.
(references from the above research
to come!)
My initial proposal for a thesis
show (energyComposer) remains to be
realized, yet my current plan has solved most personal
goals for developing this project.
